Community Garden

2009 What a SUCCESS!

After many community conversations it was noted that a Community Garden was chosen as one of the top five priorities.  This vision solidified when a couple donated the use of land right in the center of Northport.  Through combined efforts, a grant was written to purchase a greenhouse.  The Washington Health Foundation awarded us this $12,000 grant in 2009 to purchase the greenhouse.  The DeVlieg Foundation along with NCPR paid the labor to erect the greenhouse, purchase and build the fence. A variance was given by The Town of Northport, in regards to fencing height. (To try and thwart those cute little hoofed friends.)

In the summer of 2009 that shared dream and vision of many a community member became a reality.  The Community Garden was planted, tended, and a bountiful and abundant harvest was enjoyed by many. Through dedication and perseverance, through happy hearts, and commitment to health, the garden was a success.  We plan to learn from our efforts and errors, work hard where we need to change and improve, and accept responsibility and accountability where we fell short. To all the volunteers and donors, we give to you our deeply heartfelt thanks.

The greenhouse was finished towards the end of summer, but sits ready to begin starts this spring. Rural Resources gave us three students to assist with the garden and various gardening projects around town. If you look at the accompanying pictures you will see what an awesome job these students and community members did. The produce was luscious and prolific.

We are awaiting word on the status of a grant written in conjunction with the school for adding to the greenhouse a heater, planting shelves and trays, raised beds and more. We are hoping to mentor K-8 students at the garden as part of their science classes.

Wendy is ready to begin again this year. If you want to know more about the Community Garden and how you can get involved: contact us at the information listed below.
